GREETINGS:
Cooler weather has arrived and we can comfortably spend more time on the trail. I
am sure the terrible events of the past week have changed your outlook on many things. As
President Bush says, we should never forget the tragedy of last week, but it is time to
move on with our lives. We should return to as many normal activities as possible. The
clubs sponsoring events have worked hard to get things ready for your walking pleasure.
Please go out and support their efforts. If you are planning on doing a Global Event or an
event on a Military Facility, I recommend checking with the sponsoring club before
heading for the start point. Many of these events have been canceled or are temporarily
closed. Folks have been posting event closures or cancellations on Walklist.
TVA
MEETING: The February TVA meeting will be in Corpus Christi, February 2, 2002. The
Sparkling City Strollers are the host club for the Saturday meetings and Sunday walk
event. Helene Fennessy has reserved a block of 15 rooms at the Ramada Inn Bayfront
Conference Center in Corpus Christi. The room rate is $65.00+ tax per night for a double
or king room. This does not include any breakfast. There is a restaurant in the hotel.
This is the start point for the CC YRE event. The phone number of the Ramada Inn is
361-882-8100. Reservations must be made by January 1, 2002 to get the room at this rate!
If we take all 15 rooms, there will be no charge for the meeting room. We will
approve the TVA budget at the meeting and will conduct other important business as listed
on the agenda.
Event Report:
As of this newsletter, we have sanctioned 102 events for 2001. We had 123 total
events sanctioned in 2000. We have sanctioned 24 events for 2002. In 2000 at this
time, we had 30 events sanctioned for 2001. All of the YRE’s have been submitted and
we have 67 Year Round Events sanctioned for 2002. There are 6 others that will go in as
seasonal events, starting in May. We lost 9 YRE’s and added 4 new ones in Midland and
Odessa.
In addition,
we have 2 more clubs going inactive. The Shiner Half Moon Walkers and The Hill Country
Hikers are both going inactive for the same reason - NO ONE TO FILL THE OFFICER’S
POSITIONS. The current officers are burnt out and do not want to continue.
Memorial and
New Year’s Events: Please remind your clubs about the December 31, 2001 and
January 1, 2002 events in Fredericksburg. I am enclosing brochures for these events. Make
additional copies to meet your club’s needs. Robert Theis has worked hard to provide
new and interesting trails for these events. The Memorial walk is a time to remember those
from the Texas Clubs that have passed on to a greater trail and award level. Enclosed is a
form for you to provide the appropriate information to Anna Cottrill so she can prepare
the Memorial Board for the event.
YRE Start
Boxes: Just a reminder to check your start boxes to be sure they are in good shape and
stocked with the needed material for your guests. Remember, the walk box is the first
impression a walker gets of your club. A disorganized box with missing materials sets a
negative tone and the walker may not enjoy your event. A few minutes to check things out
pays off in the long haul.
TVA EVENT
CALENDAR: Enclosed is the current TVA event calendar for your use in planning future
events. It is always best to avoid scheduling conflicts. Please review the calendar and
let me know of any needed corrections.
Quality
events bring more participants. Keep up your hard work to make them happen!
